WEE PAPA GIRL RAPPERS

A brit Wee Papa Girl Rapperst két lánytestvér alapította 1987-ben. Nevükkel ellentétben inkább a dance, semmint a rapzenét képviselték. Legnagyobb slágerük az 1988 őszén megjelent Wee Rule volt. Későbbi felvételeik jóval csekélyebb érdeklődést keltettek, ezért a duó 1991-ben megszűnt. A testvérek két év múlva újra feltűntek a popvilágban Wee Papa Girls néven, de a szerencse nem pártolt melléjük, ezért a következő évben megint visszavonultak.

KARRIERTÖRTÉNET 

A kezdetek 

A Wee Papa Girl Rapperst egy ikerpár, Sandra és négy évvel fiatalabb húga, Samantha Lawrence alkotta. Egy 1988-as Bravo magazinban Sandrát 23, Samanthát 19 évesnek írták le, vagyis Naff valószínűleg 1965-ben, Cruddy pedig 1969-ben született. Édesapjuk a karibi Saint Lucia szigetállamból származott, ahol a francia az egyik beszélt nyelv. A Wee Papa nem más, mint a francia „Oui Papa” (Igen, papa) eltorzítása. A Girl Rappers elnevezés sem teljesen pontos, hiszen a formáció zenei világa inkább a reggae és a dancehall, semmint a rap vagy a hiphop hatását tükrözi. A lányok tehetségére először a Fine Young Cannibals tagjai figyeltek fel 1983-ban, majd Sandra és Samantha Feargal Sharkey videóiban bukkant fel. 1987-ben kisebb szerepet játszottak az Out of Order című angol filmben. Jonnie Turpe nem túl ismert alkotásának főszereplője, a munkanélküli Anthony (Gary Webster) bejelenti, hogy belép a rendőrséghez, amivel szinte sokkolja a barátnőjét és a barátait. A filmezés ezzel az opusszal véget is ért, ám ami a popkarriert illeti, Sandrát és Samanthát a Sony egyik leányvállalata, az 1981-ben alapított Jive Records szerződtette. 1987-ben jelent meg debütáló kislemezük, a Rock the Clock, amely még nem sok vizet zavart. A következő évben kiadott Faith a brit toplista 60. helyéig jutott. Ki tudja, ebben talán az is szerepet játszott, hogy az első kislemezzel ellentétben ezen már a lányok által írt dal hallható. A Heat It Up még nagyobb sikert hozott: 21. helyezést ért el az angol toplistán, mellesleg az európai kontinensen is ismertté tette a Wee Papa Girl Rappers nevét. A sikerben osztozott a Two Men and a Drum Machine formáció is – Andy Cox és David Steele –, akik a produceri teendőket látták el, illetve Steele volt a lányok társszerzője is.

Wee Rule 

Az 1988 őszén kiadott Wee Rule egész Európában nagy slágerré vált, amit a toplistás helyezések is bizonyítanak: Angliában hatodik lett, Svájcban a negyedik, az NSZK-ban a tizedik, Ausztriában pedig a tizenkettedik. A klipet Jamaica fővárosában, Kingstonban forgatták. A Wee Rule sikerét sajnos nem sikerült sem fokozni, sem megtartani. A Soulmate Angliában már csak a 45. helyig jutott, a Blow the House Down pedig a 65. helyig. A lányok debütáló albuma, az 1988-ban megjelent The Beat, The Rhyme, The Noise 12 felvételt tartalmaz, beleértve a kislemezen is megjelent dalokat – a Rock the Clock kivételével. Két év múlva került a boltokba a második album, a Be Aware, amelyen szintén egy tucat szerzemény kapott helyet. Közülük a Get in the Groove aratta a legnagyobb sikert Európában, ámbár a Wee Rule népszerűségét nem múlta felül. A The Bump inkább az Egyesült Államokban futott be, a Billboard Hot Dance Music\Club Play slágerlistáján tizedik lett. Karrierjének hanyatlása miatt a Wee Papa Girl Rappers 1991-ben megszűnt. A Lawrence lányok azonban nem vártak hosszú éveket, hogy egy nosztalgiahullám újra divatba hozza őket: 1993-ban újra nekifutottak, nevüket immár Wee Papa Girlsre rövidítve. Ez sem hozta meg a remélt fordulatot a pályájukon, ezért a formáció a következő évben ismét feloszlott.
